The untamed Lech river in the leading role, the mountains as a backdrop - that's long-distance hiking deluxe. The "Lechweg - from the source to the fall" was the first long-distance hiking trail to be awarded Leading Quality Trail - Best of Europe and as such was a model for long-distance hiking trails throughout Europe. The Lechweg connects three regions and two countries with their traditions and histories. From the Arlberg region to the Tyrolean nature park region of Lechtal-Reutte to the southern Allgäu. The Lech river has shaped all three regions over the centuries.
The long-distance hiking trail starts near the source of the Lech at the idyllic Formarinsee lake in Vorarlberg, Austria. The route then leads into the Lech Valley and the Tiroler Lech Nature Park. The long-distance hike becomes a special nature experience, as the untamed wild river Lech sets the tone here. Flora and fauna: everything bears witness to originality and freedom. After Reutte, you cross the border to the end point of the long-distance hiking trail, the Lechfall in Füssen in the Allgäu region.
Due to storm damage, sections of the Lechweg are not accessible on the stage from Pflach to Füssen. A detour has been set up.
The Lechweg
The Lechweg standsfor moderate long-distance hiking in an alpine region. This is also one of the last wild river landscapes in Europe. With a bit of luck, you will come across one of the largest ibex colonies in Europe, legendary natural spectacles, one of the longest pedestrian suspension bridges in Austria and the Bavarian royal castles of Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau along the way. For those who like sporty long-distance hiking, the 125-kilometre route can be completed in six stages. A more leisurely option is eight or more stages. The Lechweg is suitable for all hiking fans - even those with no experience of long-distance hiking. It starts at an altitude of around 1,800 meters and ends at an altitude of around 800 meters in Füssen, which means that it leads downhill overall.
The Lechweg extends this year's hiking season, as the Lech local bus will also run to Lake Formarin between October 5 and 26, 2025. Important to note: Should the weather conditions deteriorate during October, the bus service will be suspended immediately, meaning that the Lechweg can only be hiked in part! Please check the local conditions and possible bus transfersearly and regularly.

Füssen Lech loops
The Lech loops are intended as an extension and enrichment - and equally as an alternative for the "not-so-far hiker". Like the Lechweg (at least as a conceptual starting point), they all have a great protagonist: the Lech and the wonderful landscape that surrounds it. There are two Leich loops in Füssen, both of which start at the Lech Falls:
Lechschleife 8
- Tourengebiet: Füssen - Hohenschwangau
- Wanderzeit: ca. 5 Stunden
- Höhenmeter: 485 m
- Länge: 13,6 km
Lechschleife 9
- Tourengebiet: Bad Faulenbach
- Wanderzeit: ca. 6 Stunden
- Höhenmeter: 286 m
- Länge: 15,4 km
Lechweg partner companies
The Lechweg partner businesses also put their hearts into it. They offer the same service as our certified hiking hosts and identify very strongly with this fantastic long-distance hiking trail.
