The High Castle in Füssen

The Hohe Schloss Füssen towers majestically over the town and is one of the most significant late-Gothic castle complexes in Swabia. With its striking towers and the elaborate trompe-l'œil paintings on its facades, it is a true gem of the region. Originally built as a summer residence for the Prince-Bishops of Augsburg, the castle still exudes an impressive splendor and grandeur to this day.

A sumptuous and delicious burger at the High Castle

Inside the High Castle, you’ll find fascinating galleries housing a wide variety of artworks. The branch gallery of the Bavarian State Painting Collections presents an extensive collection of late Gothic art, featuring works by important masters of the period. In the historic rooms, you’ll also find rotating exhibitions of contemporary art that enrich the historic ambiance with modern touches.

A highlight is the Municipal Gallery, located in the former prince-bishop’s residence. Here you can admire masterpieces of painting from various eras and immerse yourself in the world of art. During your visit, you can also explore the battlements and the gate tower, which offer a spectacular view over the rooftops of the Old Town, the former Via Claudia Augusta, and the surrounding countryside.
