Information on the audio tour for wheelchair users and people with limited mobility

As in many historic cities, Füssen’s streetscape is characterized by cobblestones. In addition, due to its topography, the city center features significant inclines in some areas. To help you plan your tour effectively, we’ve compiled information on the ground conditions and inclines for all stops. This allows you to assess in advance which sections of the audio tour are well-suited for you and which may present some challenges.
A Self-Guided Tour of Füssen's Old Town
- The route from Stations 1–5, from the Seiler Tower to the Baroque Basilica of St. Mang, is entirely flat. For the most part, you can use the embedded slabs to avoid the cobblestones. The Baroque Basilica of St. Mang is accessible via a wheelchair ramp and an automatic door opener that can be operated from the outside.
- The High Castle (Station 6) is accessible only via a long incline with a 13 % gradient. The surface may be slippery when wet. It may be advisable to skip this station if necessary.
- To reach the St. Mang Monastery Courtyard (Station 7), the route leads from the town hall entrance along a short section of the traffic-calmed Lechhalde, which has a slight downward slope of about 8–10 % at this point. Since the sidewalk along the monastery building has steps in some places, using the roadway may be the more suitable option depending on individual needs. Access to the Courtyard of the monastery is barrier-free via a lowered curb.
- To reach the church Heilig-Geist-Spitalkirche (Station 8), the route leads from the monastery courtyard across Lechhalde. This section runs downhill and has a steep gradient of about 13 %. Due to a high threshold and a narrow entrance door, the interior of the church is currently not accessible to wheelchair users.
- Additional slopes and inclines: The descent from the Theresienbrücke to the Lechuferweg has a 10 % gradient; Spitalgasse between Stations 9 and 10 has an incline of at least 10 %.
- Recommended alternative route: For a tour that is accessible throughout, we recommend skipping stations 8 and 9. After station 7, you can proceed directly to station 14 (Brotmarkt). From there, you can visit the stations Kappenzipfel (13), Alter Friedhof (12, south entrance), Quaglioblick (11), and Franziskanerkloster (10, monastery garden accessible) in reverse order. The return trip to the Brotmarkt follows the same route.
